Railway Scrapbook - Steam Before 1950
My scrapbook of railway photographs spans the First and Second Ages of Rail, some going back to the 1860's. Some are from railway archives, and some were taken by first generation enthusiasts before or just after World War II. In those days there was little published information about railways, so enthusiasts swapped pictures in a network that spanned oceans. I am continuing an old tradition by placing these in the public domain. It is not a large collection, but the pictures are more likely to be preserved if they are widely available, so viewers are welcome have copies for personal use - just use the "Message" box to make a request. I am not aware of any copyright issues.

The San Juan at Durango. The first car is a Railway Post Office (RPO), one of the chief reasons for the trains’ existence. Locomotive 470 was a K-28 class 2-8-2, converted from standard gauge to the narrow 3 ft gauge which then comprised a substantial part of the Denver & Rio Grand Railroad’s network.

    Welcome
Over fifty years of interest in railways, and thirty years in their employ, there is a tendency to accumulate stuff, no matter how ruthless you may be. Now with a scanner and Photoshop, lots of those photographs, some not much bigger than a postage stamp, can be brought to life and shared around. I have done my best to caption them accurately, but welcome additions and corrections, as will other viewers.
